Frequently asked questions

Dry ice is the name for carbon dioxide in its solid state. It’s lowest temperature is registered as – 78.64 ºC with a recorded density of 1.56 g/cm³.

Dry ice removes almost twice as much heat per kg as water ice and has the added advantage of changing directly from a solid to a gas without ever becoming a liquid – hence the term “dry ice”. This means it leaves no residue to clean up.

Always wear protective gloves whenever handling dry ice. Prolonged contact with skin may result in frostbite. Please seek medical attention immediately if frostbite is encountered.

Always store dry ice in a well ventilated area. Dry ice will sublimate into carbon dioxide (CO2) gas. CO2 is heavier than air and will accumulate in low spaces. Carbon dioxide gas at elevated concentrations could create a suffocation hazard. Please reach for oxygen source immediately if suffocation is encountered.

Store dry ice in an insulated container – the better the insulation, the slower the rate of sublimation to CO2 gas. The best container is the polystyrene box that we stock in three different sizes. Do not store dry ice in an airtight plastic or glass container.

Dry ice is constantly sublimating away; literally every second, every minute. Proper storing of dry ice helps to keep its sublimation rate minimal. The volumetric size of a block of dry ice relative to its storage space and the ambient temperature within the storage, among others, all play a role in extending the lifespan of dry ice.

At KSHK, we offer free advice on how to store the intended dry ice purchase. But first, tell us what your unique requirements are. We are here to help!

We always recommend keeping the dry ice unopened in our packaging until it is required and always store the box in a cool place.
